3 Things To Consider When Looking for a Chiropractic Digital X-Ray System

Are you starting a new practice or thinking about adding digital x-ray services to your existing chiropractic practice? Adding digital x-ray to your practice is a great investment, but it can be overwhelming if you are new to owning a digital x-ray system. Here’s my top 3 list of things to consider as you begin your search:

• What types of images do you want to take?

• Where do you want to put your x-ray machine?
• What features and tools are most important to you for the system to have?

What type of images do you want to take?

There are a lot of options when it comes to x-ray systems. Are you mostly wanting images of the neck and spine, or do you want to be able to x-ray extremities also? Do you only need to take images with the patient standing? 

Most chiropractors take images with their patients standing and choose to only take x-rays of the spine. Many chiropractors opt for a standard x-ray system with a non-tilting wall stand similar to the system shown below. But, if you want the option of a tilting bucky, that is also available. 

Straight arm systems similar to the one shown here are also an option that some chiropractors choose, especially in cases where the x-ray is going into a smaller room.  

Where do you want to put your x-ray machine?

The location and size of your room can influence the choices you make when it comes to building out an x-ray room and choosing what equipment you wish to purchase. Depending on where you place the operator area and the location of doors and windows, a standard system with an x-ray tube and non-tilting wall stand usually fit in an 11’ x 7’ space. If your space is smaller, you may want to consider a straight arm system or a system that only takes images at 40 SID.

When looking at the location in your practice where you wish to place your x-ray room, consider that the need for additional lead lining may impact your build-out cost.
