The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Health Service Regulation, Radiation Protection Section manages the licensing, registration, and regulations of portable x-ray equipment in the state.
X-ray License in North Carolina
The state of North Carolina does not license the operators of x-ray equipment, nor does it have any requirements relative to the licensure or credentialing of x-ray machine operators. However, you can submit credentials here.
Registering an X-ray Device
As required by the "North Carolina Regulations For Protection Against Radiation" rules .0203 Application: Registration: Radiation Machines: Facilities: and .0205 Application For Registration of Service, each registrant shall complete a proper application to register radiation machines and facilities.

Regulations for Portable X-ray Equipment
Regulations are covered by Chapter 15 – Radiation Protection, Section .0100 – General Provisions.
- "Hand-held x-ray system" means any device or equipment that is portable and used for similar purposes as analytical RGD equipment.
- Portable or mobile equipment shall be used only for examinations where it is impractical for medical reasons to transfer the patient to a stationary radiographic installation.
A Hand-Held X-ray Equipment Exemption Request must be submitted prior to use of hand-held dental equipment.
