The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) oversees all regulations regarding portable x-rays. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) oversees the licensing to operate x-ray machines through the Division of Research Safety (DRS).
X-ray License in Illinois
The IEMA runs the program for Accreditation in Medical Radiography. The cost is $120, plus a 2.25% convenience fee. Here is the Application for Initial Accreditation.
Registering an X-ray Device
The Illinois Administrative Code Section 320.10 covers the registration of all x-ray devices and states:
“Any operator of a radiation installation shall register that radiation installation with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (Agency). The operator shall register the installation, before the installation is placed in operation, on a form prescribed by the Agency.”
This can be done through the IEMA.
Regulations for Portable X-ray Equipment
Regulations for portable x-ray machines in Illinois are also tied into Medicare for Illinois. The rules state that any diagnostic mobile x-ray tests (including those at home) must be under the supervision of a physician. The residence used can include a hospital or nursing home, but it cannot provide these services itself (i.e., an x-ray cannot be located in the same building). To be certified as a portable X-ray supplier, the mobile system cannot be fixed at one location or permanently stored.
