Registering an X-ray Device
There is a license to acquire, install, use, and manage x-ray equipment in the state of Hawaii. Here is the application for a Radiation Facility License. There is also a form for making amendments to existing licenses.
Regulations for Portable X-ray Equipment
The state follows the federal code Part 1020, Radiation-Emitting Electronic Systems.
Types of x-ray equipment are defined as follows:
(1) Mobile x-ray equipment means equipment mounted on a permanent base with wheels or casters for moving while assembled
(2) Portable x-ray equipment means x-ray equipment designed to be hand-carried

- “Portable or mobile x-ray equipment shall be used only for examinations where it is impractical to transfer the patient(s) to a stationary x-ray installation.”
- Mobile and portable x-ray systems which are:
- Used for less than one week in the same location shall be provided with either a protective barrier at least 6.5 feet (two meters) high for operator protection during exposures, or means shall be provided to allow the operator to be at least twelve feet (3.7 meters) from the tube housing assembly during the exposure.
- A tube stand or other mechanical support shall be used for portable x-rays
