Buying New vs. Used Digital X-ray Machines

There is a lot of debate in the chiropractic world about buying new vs. used digital x-ray machines. Many chiropractors will search for used digital x-ray systems as a way to minimize the cost of going digital. For some, this can be a great cost saving exercise and work out in their favor. However, many others end up having buyer's remorse with buying used digital x-ray machines or just used x-ray machines in general, as it's a gamble and there are no guarantees. In this blog post, we'll look at some things to consider before deciding which way to go with your purchase.

Key Considerations When Purchasing Used X-ray Machines

Used x-ray machines can be found at a lower price point than newer models, so if you’re on a stringent budget, buying used x-ray equipment might be an option for you. If you want to buy a used machine there are a few things that you are going to want to check before making a purchase.

  • What is the cost to de-install, move and re-install the used x-ray machine?
  • Was the x-ray machine operational or has it been sitting in storage? If you are unable to have proof that the system works before purchase, there is a chance you will have to invest more money to make it work. Also, x-ray systems that sit for a while tend to have more problems. They are better when used on a regular basis.
  • Are all of the parts there? We have had many customers purchase a used x-ray machine to find that a rail or part is missing and in some cases, this ends up making the machine unusable if the parts are no longer available.

If you can find a used x-ray machine that is under 15 years old and can show proof that it works, it could be a great find. However, we advise to pair even a perfect used x-ray machine with a new DR panel as technology has evolved over the years, and it is not a piece that you want to purchase as used.

Avoid CR systems and older DR panel technology such as Naomi or other CCD detectors, especially if the panel manufacturer is no longer in business. CR digital systems and DR digital panels with CCR or GADOX are old technology.

It's also important to consider the ongoing maintenance cost vs. buying a new system that comes with a warranty. Most new systems will come with a 5 year warranty which is highly valuable. When considering used cost savings, you want to calculate the total cost of ownership over 10-20 years. If you buy a system that will need a ton of maintenance you could easily end up spending more on a used system than on a new system.

Key Advantages of New Digital X-Ray Machines

1. You can select from a variety of digital x-ray machines. Digital x-ray equipment has become much more affordable than it used to be; and there are many systems currently available that come with warranties or additional support options.

2. Prevent maintenance costs, as you may find that used x-ray machines need repair or service work done before they can be used again. This is why used models are often sold for less than their original retail cost and generally come with limited warranties..

3. New machines will usually include a more detailed breakdown of services needed. As we mentioned previously, new x-ray machine manufacturers might offer warranty support options or services that don't come with used machines.

4. Better financing options are generally available, and most new x-ray machine manufacturers offer small business owners a variety of different payment plans that can lower their monthly payments. These types of financing options often do not come with used machines so be aware as to whether or not your used models will require ongoing or large service fees down the road.
